Rico Nasty: Roof

Rico Nasty is riding the high off her hottest year yet. Whilst any artist can opt to give themselves a break after releasing an album, this wasn’t the path Rico Nasty was destined to follow. After releasing her album ‘Nasty’ in 2018, she hasn’t taken her foot off the accelerator in 2019 with her latest single ‘Roof’.

‘Roof’ gives major Missy Elliott vibes, as the rapper embodies the ultimate level of confidence through a rough and aggressive attitude in her vocals. Furthermore, she raps at an otherworldly pace, also playing into constructing her indestructible persona. 

She provides another layer of finesse on the track with intense, thumping beats, that are penetrated by her lyricism. She’s undeniably self-assured and proud, as she spits, “I look good in every angle so you don’t like me beside you”. Her aura is powerful and intimidating, deeming her a rap force to be reckoned with. 

Just as punchy as the track is the accompanying music video. In partnership with Cody Dobie, Rico Nasty gives us one of the most innovative videos to date. She fosters a video game-like atmosphere, packing in an abundance of special effects and addictive futuristic vibes. 

She collapses an insane amount of visual and lyrics into less than 3 minutes, which is the perfect way to capture an audience. The darting, rapid visuals ensure that listeners and viewers don’t avert their gaze, however not sexually, backed by her lyric “How I get so much attention without showing’ ass or titties?”

That’s how – through astonishingly creative and trippy visuals. 

Whilst we notice a forceful, vigorous vocal delivery, the video provides contrast in her femininity. Rico Nasty gives us a taste of her as a supreme being. Dressed as a stunning, regal goddess, perhaps she’s constructed this identity to foreshadow her growing untouchability in the rap sphere.
